Sam Quinones, author of Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream

Journalist Sam Quinones lived in Mexico for 10 years writing freelance for a variety of US publications. In 1998, he was a recipient of the Alicia Patterson Fellowship. In 2001 he published a highly acclaimed collection of stories about contemporary Mexico, True Tales from Another Mexico: the Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino and the Bronx (UNM Press).

He now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Sheila, and daughter, Kate, and is
a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times.

Tombstone, Arizona

Sherry Monahan is an authority on "the city that wouldn't die" and its history. In Tombstone's Treasure, she focuses on the silver mines, one reason for the city's founding, and the saloons, the other reason the city grew so quickly. She is a regular visitor to Tombstone and other western cities and has appeared on the History Channel.

She is a member of Women Writing the West, Western Writers of America, and the North Carolina Writer's Network. Her previous books include The Wicked West: Boozers, Cruisers, Gamblers, and More; Pikes Peak: Adventurers, Communities and Lifestyles; and Taste of Tombstone: A Hearty Helping of History. She resides in North Carolina.

Ann Carey McFeatters, author of Sandra Day O'Connor: Justice in the Balance

McFeatters is Washington Bureau Chief for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Toledo Blade and writes a weekly column about the White House for Scripps Howard News Service.

Joan A. Lowy, author of Pat Schroeder: A Woman in the House

African Genocide

Lucian Niemeyer, author and photographer, Africa: The Holocausts of Rwanda and Sudan

In 1994, internationally known author and photographer Lucian Niemeyer began a series of journeys to Africa to document and expose atrocities being committed there. Niemeyer traveled to the Rwandan refugee camps in Zaire a few months after the terrible Hutu-on-Tutsi genocide. Subsequent trips to the Sudan were made to document slavery, the oil field genocide, and the Nuba Mountain epoch. Niemeyer lives in Santa Fe.

Francisco E. Balderrama is professor of American history and Chicano studies at California State University, Los Angeles.

Raymond Rodríguez is a freelance writer and professor emeritus, Long Beach Community College. He won the Myers Center Award for the study of human rights in North America, 1995.

Nicholas J. Cull and Davíd Carrasco, editors of Alambrista and the U.S.-Mexico Border: Film, Music, and Stories of Undocumented Immigrants

Nicholas J. Cull, a leading British historian of film, is professor of American Studies at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.

Davíd Carrasco is the Neil Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America at Harvard University, where he holds joint appointments in the Department of Anthropology and the Divinity School.

Robert Julyan and Mary Stuever, editors of Field Guide to the Sandia Mountains

Robert Julyan is the author of numerous travel and New Mexico-related books including The Place Names of New Mexico and the forthcoming The Mountains of New Mexico. He resides in Albuquerque.

Mary Stuever is a forester and ecologist with a passion for sharing the outdoors with others. Co-author of the Philmont Fieldguide, which inspired this project, Stuever provided initial direction and guidance.

Ferenc M. Szasz, author of The Day the Sun Rose Twice: The Story of the Trinity Site Nuclear Explosion, July 16, 1945; Larger Than Life: New Mexico in the Twentieth Century, and co-editor with Richard W. Etulain of The American West in 2000: Essays in Honor of Gerald D. Nash

Szasz is professor of U.S. intellectual history and U.S. history of religion, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.

G. Emlen Hall, author of High and Dry: The Texas-New Mexico Struggle for the Pecos River and Four Leagues of Pecos: A Legal History of the Pecos Grant, 1800-1933

Hall is a writer and professor of law at the University of New Mexico. He is also editor-in-chief of Natural Resources Journal. He combines his legal expertise with a passion for gardening.

Linda G. Harris, author of Ghost Towns Alive: Trips to New Mexico's Past, with photographer Pamela Porter

Linda Harris, a Las Cruces resident, has been traveling and writing about New Mexico for twenty-five years. Her books on water resources, architecture, libraries, and history have won several awards, including the Southwest Book Award and the Zia Book Award.
